Floor G & Stairwell Light Fixtures: How the environment can affect human beings, and why it's important
Just as people affect the landscape, so does the landscape affect people! This is a big part of why people have learned to understand and manipulate the landscape for their own benefit. For example, the level and intensity of light in a space can affect someone's mental state. More intense lighting can elicit more intense emotions -- both positive and negative – from humans. Lighting can also be used to subtly focus attention, elicit feelings of relaxation, or direct movement. Manipulating the level and direction of light is an easy and subtle way to alter the popular conception of the meaning and emotion of a space. These wall lights, found in the stairwell and lower floors of McMillan, create an atmosphere of relaxation and serenity by projecting diffuse and low-intensity light, without drawing attention. This creates a subconscious sense of calm and concentration in even the most stressed student, professor, or researcher, making these an excellent and likely intentional design choice for the academic environment.
